    Despite the many socialization agents whose influence children are subjected to, there is a clear consensus among scholars in the human development field about the central role of family as the first socialization context. Families and parents in particular, are responsible for building secure, emotionally warm, stimulating and structured family environments, and to supervise the behaviours of their children, bearing in mind their well being and development.

    This article presents a brief overview of the literature on the concept of quality of family environment and on the research that has been conducted with the HOME Inventory (Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment, Caldwell & Bradley 1984, 2003), particularly in what concerns the predictors and consequences of the quality of family environment for the development of children and youngsters.

    Apesar dos múltiplos agentes de socialização a cuja influência as crianças estão submetidas, existe um claro consenso entre os estudiosos do desenvolvimento humano acerca da família como primeiro contexto de socialização. A família, e em especial os pais, são responsáveis por construir um ambiente familiar seguro, afetivamente caloroso, estimulante, estruturado e capaz de supervisionar a ação da criança e do jovem, sempre tendo em vista o seu bem-estar e desenvolvimento.

    Este artigo pretende apresentar uma breve síntese da literatura sobre o conceito de qualidade do ambiente familiar e sobre a investigação que tem sido realizada com o Inventário HOME (Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment; Caldwell & Bradley 1984; 2003), nomeadamente no que diz respeito aos preditores e às consequências da qualidade do ambiente familiar para o desenvolvimento das crianças e dos jovens.
