The Sierra of Altomira is a north-south directed alignment of folds, mainly consisting of series marine cretaceous limestones. Above these folded beds, Royo found continental neogene gastropods. Because of these findings he proposed that all sediments were of Miocene age, which was against the opinion generalized until then. On the basis of this interpretation, Royo developed a complicated structural framework and suggested a post-miocene tectonic phase explaining the strong folding of these limestones. After several years, Royo realized his error step by step, and finally he abandoned his former hypothesis and agreed to a solution, consistent with the knowledge from modern detailed cartography
