A testimonial novel or the historian's predicament: "Los sátrapas del occidente"

  • Los Sátrapas del Occidente is an unpublished manuscript found in the loft of a house in France. In it the writer, Andreu Martí has attempted to construct an historical novel to give an account of the Francoist repression after the war. The main character of the novel finds himself in the camps in France only to return to Spain to experience imprisonment. In this article, I follow the paths of this unknown writer as well as the truth behind what the text explains. As a historian, I question the factual-fiction dichotomy while highlighting the ethical issues of this tension when giving an account of violent events
