Resumen de Hormigas arrieras: Cómo encontrarlas y aumentar la observación de aves "hormigueras"

  Presentamos una descripción concisa y actual sobre el comportamiento de las hormigas arrieras y las aves que las siguen. Nuestro objetivo es proveer un conocimiento básico sobre este fenómeno, relevante para aumentar las probabilidades de observar aves �hormigueras� y a la vez minimizar potenciales impactos negativos en las aves y en las hormigas. Iniciamos con un resumen del comportamiento de forrajeo de las hormigas arrieras, especialmente de Eciton burchellii, la especie más seguida por las aves.

  Posteriormente describimos el comportamiento de seguir hormigas arrieras que algunas aves presentan, enfocándonos en las especies de aves que siguen estas hormigas con mayor regularidad. Finalizamos con recomendaciones para que los observadores de aves e investigadores incrementen la cantidad de observaciones de las aves que generalmente siguen hormigas arrieras.

  We present a succinct updated description of the behavior of army ants and ant-following birds. Our aim is to provide basic knowledge on this phenomenon, relevant to increasing the chances of observing the birds that regularly follow these ants while minimizing potential negative impacts on the birds and the ants. We start with a summary of army-ant-foraging behavior focused on Eciton burchellii, the army ant species most often followed by birds.

  We proceed to describe the behavior of following these ants, focusing on the avian species that follow army ants more regularly. We conclude with recommendations for birdwatchers and researchers that could increase the number of observations of regular army-antfollowing birds.
