Despite of being interesting by itself, the study of water in the Universe is important to understand the origin of water in the Earth. Thus far, our knowledge of the physics and chemistry of water outside the Solar System has been hampered by the scarce observational data. The Herschel Space Observatory has provided the opportunity of observing water vapor in all astronomical environments. In this paper we summarize the most important results.
