    « From the "Total Actor" to Analysis of the Mediation of Constraint » The sociology of organization and of business enterprise shows that constraints on employees and on the autonomy of individuals coexist in work situations. This conclusion certainly represents progress within the discipline of sociology. However, it is a sociological approach that involves certain limits, such as an excessive emphasis on the autonomy of employees, which requires a reorientation of the analysis of work towards greater contextualization and a taking into greater account the mediation of constraints. The scientific and political issues of this renewal of the sociology of work are important : the maintenance of theoretical pluralism ; the need to take distance from individualistic philosophies and totalizing sociologies ; to identify the political determinants of work constraints.

    La sociologie des organisations et de l'entreprise a montré que la contrainte salariale et l'autonomie des acteurs pouvaient coexister dans les situations de travail. Cette thèse demeure assurément une avancée au sein de la discipline sociologique. Cependant, certaines limites de cette approche sociologique, comme une focalisation excessive sur l'autonomie des salariés, invite à réorienter l'analyse du travail vers davantage de contextualisation et de prise en compte des médiations des contraintes. Les enjeux scientifiques et politiques d'un tel renouvellement de l'étude du monde du travail et des organisations ne sont pas des moindres : maintenir un pluralisme théorique ; se démarquer des philosophies individualistes et des sociologies exclusivement compréhensives ou encore identifier les déterminants politiques des contraintes du travail
