    El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la distinción entre tratamiento y mejora, base de algunas de las críticas más sólidas al empleo de las nuevas tecnologías biomédicas. En primer lugar se analizan las definiciones más habituales ligadas al tratamiento, como las de salud, enfermedad y medicina, exponiendo sus limitaciones y problemas. A continuación se señalan las distintas tareas que se le encomiendan a esta distinción: 1) diferenciar nuestras obligaciones con los demás de lo que no les debemos, 2) establecer lo que debe procurarse a través de un sistema de seguros, públicos o privados, frente a lo que ha de proveerse desde fuera de ese sistema y 3) separar lo moralmente permisible de lo que no lo es. A partir de aquí se concluye que, mientras que la distinción entre tratamiento y mejora puede tener alguna utilidad en los dos primeros casos, carece de fundamento en el tercero.

    The aim of this paper is to analyze the treatment/enhancement distinction as employed by those against using the newest biomedical technologies for purposes other than those strictly curative. First, we analyze the most common definitions related to treatment, such as health, disease or medicine, showing their limitations and problems. Secondly, we consider three different tasks usually assigned to the treatment/enhancement distinction: 1) to establish what we owe to others, 2) to establish what should be included as part of a medical insurance system and 3) to distinguish the morally permissible from the morally impermissible. We conclude that the treatment/enhancement distinction is a useful, if limited, tool for the first two tasks, but an inadequate one for the third.
