This paper deals with the organic geochemistry of a "lignite" bed at the bottom of the Guadix-Baza composite stratotype section, just below the end of the Olduvai Chron. The results of the organic matter analysis (Iow H/C ratio and predominance of even n-alkanes) together with the lack of pollen and micromammal remains as well as the abundance of charcoal particles, suggest the development 01 the first wild-fire in the Mediterranean realm, which affected the catchment area of the alluvial fan that fed the Cortes de Baza area.
