The Freser gneissic dome (Núria massif) has been considered either an outcrop of the Precambrian basement or a pre-Hercynian laccolith of Ordovician age. New field observations strongly suggest that the lower Núria «gneises» are intrusive into the enclosing schists formed during the Hercynian Orogeny. This fact indicates an Hercynian age for these rocks and the convenience to rename them as «Núria granites». Nolsimilar relationships between the Queralbs gneisses and the schists have been found. Its well-developed foliation also seems to confirm a pre-Hercynian age for its protolith.
