    • The studies of geology in the University of Oviedo (Spain) start officially in 1958, but the beginnings of teaching geological subjects goes back to 1845, with the creation of the section of Natural Sciences within the faculty of Sciences. In the next yeal; the "Gabinete de Historia Natural" was founded as a complement of this teaching. In 1860 the section was suppressed. The studies of sciences were not restored in the Oviedo university unti11895. In 1955 professor Noel L/opis L/adó promoted a "Instituto de Geología Aplicada" with a double purpose: educational and researching. This Institute was the source of the section of Geological Sciences within the faculty of Sciences. Finnally in 1982 the studies of Geology were raised to the rank of faculty.
