This paper investigates the extent to which animal rights theory has permeated the mainstream of tourism research. Examples of these uses are cited along with the context of this use. Although animal rights theory appears to be used in greater detail in tourism, especially of late, what is missing is a comprehensive overview of the theory and meaning of animal rights, and how or if it fits in tourism. The paper argues that animal rights theory is almost entirely antithetical to tourism, based on how this use fails to take into consideration the inherent value of animals that make them subjects-of-a-life or ends-in-themselves. Ecotourism is discussed as an example of a form of tourism that corresponds to animal rights in theory. Some of the challenges and contradictions of aligning ecotourism with animal rights are highlighted, with suggestions for more work in this area ..
