    The article discusses the scope for and the challenges of reducing working time in this period of very high unemployment rates, deregulation and flexibilisation, phenomena that have become more marked due to the restructuring of production and the neoliberal policies of recent decades. The recent example of the 35 hours law in France is used to show the difficulties and contradictions inherent in the process, exacerbated by a correlation of forces that is unfavourable to labour and ambiguities in the �socialist� government that introduced the measure. The article also examines the indissociable link between the effectiveness of a reduction in working time and the conditions and modalities in which it is implemented.

    O artigo discute a potencialidade e os desafios da redução do tempo de trabalho nos dias atuais, marcados por altíssimos índices de desemprego, pela desregulamentação e flexibilização � características aprofundadas com a reestruturação produtiva e as políticas neoliberais das últimas décadas. O exemplo recente da lei das 35 horas na experiência francesa é utilizado para mostrar as dificuldades e contradições inerentes ao processo, agravadas por uma correlação de forças desfavorável ao trabalho e ambigüidades do governo �socialista� que implantou a medida. Mostra também a indissociável vinculação entre a eficácia da redução de jornada, e as condições e modalidades em que ela é implantada.
