  The objective of this paper is to draw a retrospective of citizenship formation and inequalities in Brazilian society and to portray the role that education can play in this context. It intends to show that inequalities are the result of intense social problems, such as the greatest concentration of wealth in few hands, and consequently, poverty and hunger, for many, unemployment; low wages; violence, in particular against children and women; marginality; and, in special, racial prejudice. Moreover, it aims a reflection on the performance of education and culture to understand the current situation of inequality in Brazil through a dip in the historical past and an analysis on how the transition from the process of colonization took place till the present day. It seeks to examine various relevant aspects, addressing issues that affect the trajectory, since the emergence of civil, social and political rights, which are elements intrinsic to citizenship, with emphasis, in terms of its influence, as a mechanism to resolve or perhaps dispel inequalities in Brazil. In parallel, it aims to analyze the identity process of ethnic and racial groups as black people who, throughout the history of Brazil, were stigmatized by slavery. It will seek to understand the contribution of education in its social function as a factor for transforming individuals into subjects capable of reflection and articulation of ideas and arguments, with active participation in society, in order to provide the full right of citizenship to finally achieve a fairer society.

  Objetivo deste artigo é desenhar uma retrospectiva da formação da cidadania e as desigualdades na sociedade brasileira e retratar o papel que a educação pode desempenhar neste contexto. Pretende-se demonstrar que as desigualdades são resultados de intensos problemas sociais, tais como: a maior concentração de renda nas mãos de poucos e, em conseqüência, a miséria e a fome, para muitos; o desemprego; os baixos salários; a violência, em especial, a infantil e contra as mulheres; a marginalidade; e, em destaque, o preconceito racial. Além disso, objetiva-se uma reflexão sobre a atuação da educação e da cultura para compreendermos o panorama atual das desigualdades no Brasil através de um mergulho no passado histórico e análise de como se deu a transição do processo de colonização até os dias atuais. Busca-se aqui examinar a trajetória, desde o seu surgimento, dos direitos civis, sociais e políticos, elementos intrínsecos da cidadania, com ênfase, ao que tange à sua influência, enquanto mecanismo para dirimir ou quiçá dissipar as desigualdades no Brasil. Em paralelo, almeja-se analisar o processo identitário de etnias e grupos raciais como os negros que, ao longo da história do Brasil, foram estigmatizados pelo escravismo. Procurar-se-á compreender qual a contribuição da educação, em sua função social, como fator de transformação dos indivíduos em sujeitos com capacidade de reflexão e articulação de ideias e argumentos, com participação ativa na sociedade, visando propiciar-lhes o direito pleno da cidadania e, assim, alcançar uma sociedade mais justa.
