Resumen de The Roman Law Donatio in the Reforms of Pope Gelasius I

  • By the fourth century A. D. the Roman Law Donatio was complex and at times confusing. It was the cause of numerous law suits. For these reasons, in 327 Emperor Constantine reformed the Donatio. The result was a streamlined and more efficient law. It was this form of the law that was employed by Pope Gelasius (492-496) in his attempt to regulate the founding of churches. References to Constantine's donatio can be found in the sources for Gelasius' successors, Pelagius I and Gregory the Great. Reference can also be found in the Liber Diurnus. Aspects of the Roman Law donatio were also emplyed by Saint Boniface in the foundation of Fulda. The success of Gelasius' reform and the part played in it by donatio attest to the importance of Roman Law in Canon Law procedures.
