En el presente artículo se examinan las alternativas de los panameños en relación con la futura administración del Canal de Panamá. Por un lado, la propuesta neoliberal somete la vía acuática a las «leyes» del mercado. Por el otro, se puede optar por cumplir con los objetivos históricos de convertir el Canal en motor del desarrollo nacional. Es necesario analizar las actuales opciones para enfrentar los retos tecnológicos, económicos y políticos que representa la vía.

This article examines the options open to the Panamanians in relation to the future administration of the Panama Canal. On the one hand, there is the neoliberal proposal to manage it in accordance with the laws of the market. On the other, the historical expectation of transforming it into a motor for national development. There is an urgent need to analyze the current options and confront the technological, economic and political challenges posed by the new responsibilities.
