La ratificación de un tratado de reconocimiento de límites marinos entre Honduras y Colombia, parece derivar hacia un largo proceso de demandas y contrademandas en diferentes órganos judiciales regionales e internacionales, en cuyo centro se ubica Nicaragua como nación afectada. El acontecimiento presagia tensiones pobladas de conceptos como geopolítica y geoestrategia, demostración de fuerza, hegemonía y expansionismo. El hecho también pone al descubierto la extrema fragilidad de la integración centroamericana. La explosión de veleidades nacionalistas podría degenerar en una indeseable escalada conflictiva entre países que apenas inician la reconstrucción después del paso devastador del huracán Mitch.

The ratification of a treaty which establishes the maritime borders between Honduras and Colombia, appears to be leading to a process of claims and counter claims in different regional and international judicial bodies in which the protagonist is Nicaragua, the affected part. The new situation gives rise to geopolitical and geostrategic confrontations and demonstrations of force, together with fears of hegemonic and expansionist pretensions. It also reveals the fragility of the Central American integration and may well fan nationalist sentiments and escalate into open conflict between countries which are just beginning to recover from the devastation of the Mitch hurricane.
