    Las elecciones presidenciales de 1999 han sido las primeras efectuadas en el Uruguay con la nueva Constitución de 1996. Y en gran medida aquella reforma supuso este resultado. Con la segunda vuelta electoral se polarizaron las inclinaciones ciudadanas, después que con la primera se abolieron las diferencias intrapartidarias. El principal desafío político del colorado Jorge Batlle será mantener unida la coalición oficialista, por cuanto el partido blanco no demorará en recordar que electoralmente es más redituable ser oposición.

    The 1999 Presidential elections were the first in Uruguay under the new 1996 Constitution. With the requirement of an absolute majority and the consequent introduction of the second round to decide between the two most-voted candidates, the result was predictable. In the second round the options were polarized, after having eliminated intra-party differences in the first one. The main challenge for the new President, Jorge Battle from the Partido Colorado, will be the preservation of the government coalition because the Partido Blanco which backed him in the second round will not fail to remember that, in electoral terms, the dividends are better when you are in the opposition.
