Resumen de The consistory court of Freising in the late Middle Ages

Kirsi Salonen

  • The present article examines the consistory court of the diocese of Freising in the late Middle Ages from two main points of view. Firstly: what was the role and functioning of the court? Secondly: what kind of issues did it deal with? The article begins with summarizing at general level the content of the court books of the consistory court of Freising. In a second step the essay addresses the practical side of the functioning of the court of Freising and its personnel and compares the results with the existing knowledge from other ecclesiastical courts in the Christian West. Finally, the study presents statistic information on what kinds of cases the court of Freising handled during the two example years, 1462 and 1463, and analyzes briefly the content of each case type. In the end, an example case is presented in details, namely the marriage dispute between Johannes Parthover and Barbara Smidhauserin.
