    Desde comienzos del siglo XIX, los responsables del Departamento de Sanidad militar del Ejército de EEUU mostraron un verdadero interés por mantener al día a los médicos militares, aun cuando se hallaran destinados en los lugares más remotos. Con el paso del tiempo, este esfuerzo llevó al establecimiento de una biblioteca central de publicaciones médicas, que finalmente cristalizó en la creación de una institución fundamental para el avance de la Medicina: la National Library of Medicine, la biblioteca médica más grande e importante del mundo.

    From the beginnings of the Nineteen Century, the heads of the US Army Medical Department showed a true interest for the updating of the medical officers, even when these were appointed to the most remote posts. In the course of time, this effort leaded to the foundation of a central library for the medical publications. Finally, it crystallized into a basic institution for the progress of the Medicine: The National Library of Medicine, the biggest and most important medical library of the whole world.
