En la década de 1960, el Estado cubano hostigó a los homosexuales y los internó en campos de trabajo forzados. Pero la homofobia ha dado paso a la homofilia y hoy el régimen apoya las operaciones de cambio de sexo y promueve los derechos de las minorías sexuales. La principal impulsora de este viraje es Mariela Castro Espín, hija del presidente Raúl Castro. El presente ensayo sostiene que, aunque este cambio de orientación no se debe menospreciar, tampoco debe ser leído simplemente como un impulso de expansión democrática, sino como el resultado de un importante proceso de transformismo político.

In the past, the Cuban State persecuted homosexuals and interned them in forced-labor camps. But this homophobia has given way to a homophilia and nowadays the regime supports operations for a change of sex and promotes the rights of sexual minorities. Who has been mainly responsible for promoting this change is Mariela Castro Espín, Raúl Castro�s daughter. This article argues that, while the advances are undeniable, they should not be understood as a step towards democracy, but rather as the result of a process by way of which the State offers rights to politically weak sectors which are nevertheless significant in symbolic terms, with a view to renewing its political capital in order to survive its current lack of legitimacy. And, at the same time, play with the possibility, in the not too distant future, of another Castrist revolution designed to leave almost everything the same: the rise of Castro Espín to the Presidency of Cuba.
