Aunque muchas veces se pasa por alto, el aporte de las mujeres al cine latinoamericano ha sido clave, no solo frente a la cámara sino detrás de ella. Al comienzo, el cine silente contó con importantes innovaciones estéticas y de producción introducidas por mujeres. Más tarde, en los combativos años 60 y 70, las directoras asumieron posiciones radicalmente feministas y se manifestaron en colectivos de cineastas mujeres, muchas veces orientados al género documental. Hoy las mujeres ya no tienen que demostrar que manejan las artes del oficio: los éxitos internacionales, las innovaciones estilísticas y los recursos narrativos originales que han aportado así lo demuestran.

Although it is often not recognized, the contribution of women to Latin American cinema has been crucial, not only on the screen but also behind the camera. At the outset, silent films could count on important esthetic and productive innovations introduced by women. Later, during the years of confrontation and combat in the sixties and seventies, women directors assumed positions that were radically feminist and which were expressed in collectives of female film producers, in many cases using the documental as the preferred means of expression. Nowadays, women no longer have to prove that they manage the techniques of the industry: the international successes, the stylistic innovations and the notable narrative resources they have contributed are demonstration enough.
