La llegada al gobierno de Michelle Bachelet y Cristina Fernández reactualizó el debate acerca de la presencia de las mujeres en la política y las características de sus liderazgos. ¿Qué aportan de nuevo las mujeres? Un estilo de manejar el poder más flexible, abierto y proclive al diálogo, pero que no debe darse por sentado, pues muchas veces los entornos las condicionan, masculinizándolas. En cualquier caso, las transformaciones culturales, la redemocratización de América Latina, las políticas de cuotas y los mayores niveles educativos alcanzados por las mujeres han fortalecido su presencia política. Sin embargo, persisten viejos obstáculos, desde los estereotipos sexistas hasta las dificultades económicas, que es necesario superar.

The accession of Michelle Bachelet and Cristina Fernández to the Presidency of their respective countries reactivates the debate over the presence of women in politics and the characteristics of their leadership. What do women bring to politics that is new? A style for managing power which is more flexible, more open and more disposed to dialogue, although this cannot be taken for granted because often they mimitize the masculine influences with which they are surrounded. In any event, the cultural transformations, the redemocratization of Latin America, the policy of quotas and the higher educational levels of women, all favor an increasing political presence. Nevertheless, long-lasting obstacles remain, from the sexist stereotypes to economic difficulties, and they need to be overcome.
