Menos de 10 años después del espectáculo macabro de la caída de la Torres Gemelas, las masivas rebeliones populares contra los autócratas Zine El Abidine Ben Ali y Hosni Mubarak y la ola de agitación democrática en el mundo árabe no solo constituyen un verdadero terremoto político, sino que trastornan completamente los imaginarios tóxicos construidos durante la «guerra contra el terror». Este artículo examina el trasfondo sociológico de los acontecimientos y la complejidad de las estructuras políticas y sociales puestas en juego, para un público latinoamericano no familiarizado con esas realidades «lejanas». En este sentido, echa luz sobre algunas de las dimensiones fundamentales de lo que llama, sin reservas, la «revolución democrática árabe»: el papel de la juventud y de las redes sociales, la agitación social y laboral, el controvertido tema del islam, el rol de los militares y de otros actores.

Less than ten years after the macabre spectacle of the fall of the Twin Towers, massive popular rebellions against autocrats Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak and a wave of democratic rumbling in the Arab world are not only a true political earthquake, but also completely disturb the toxic images constructed during the «war on terror». This article examines the sociological backdrop of the events and the complexity of the political and social structures put at risk, for a Latin American public unfamiliar with these «distant» realities. In this sense, it sheds light on some of the fundamental dimensions of what is unhesitatingly called the «Arab democratic revolution»: the role of the youth and social networks, social and labour stirrings, the controversial subject of Islam, the role of the military and other actors.
