La llegada al poder de Evo Morales como primer presidente indígena de Bolivia fue acompañada por otro hecho histórico: el arribo al gobierno de un partido con base rural, que se fue desbordando desde al campo hacia las ciudades. El Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) es un partido sui géneris, que se piensa a sí mismo como el instrumento político» de los sindicatos agrarios y mantiene fuertes vínculos con la izquierda boliviana. Su crecimiento no solo ha trastocado la correlación de fuerzas ideológicas; ha contribuido también a un fuerte proceso de ruralización de la política y de la propia identidad boliviana.
The arrival in power of Evo Morales as the first indigenous president of Bolivia was accompanied by another historical moment: the arrival in government of a party with a rural base, which went flooding from the country to the city. The Movement Toward Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS) is a party sui generis, which thinks of itself as a «political instrument» of the agrarian syndicates with strong ties to the Bolivian left. Its growth has not only disrupted the correlation of ideological forces; it has also contributed to a strong process of ruralization of policies and of the very identity of Bolivia.
