Historical criticism emerges in the University in early 20th century France, parallel to idiosyncratic aesthetic approaches in a wider public. Post-second world war anxiety enlarged both the demand for and the techniques of general historical or synchronie criticism, the latter culminating and self-destructing in S/Z. Today, the particularistic historical approach, stable to the University but grown in cultural and societal preoccupation, is reaffirming itself, while genetic criticism articulates this convergence.
