    Es permitido postular desde la historia pasada, en sus varias etapas, y reciente del pueblo mapuche que éste tiene una conciencia relativamente clara e inquebrantable de ser un pueblo, y una nación, pese a las remodelaciones que sufre debido a los impactos combinados de las políticas indistintamente neoliberales de la globalización y de Chile.

    El dilema particularmente agudo y crucial en nuestra época con el cual debe lidiar este grupo, consiste tal vez en confrontar su percepción de ser pueblo con la que se le contrapone hasta la negación el Estado chileno, desde la conclusión de la siniestra �Guerra de la Pacificación� (1881) con la reducción drástica de sus territorios, los intentos fallidos de disolución paulatina de sus rasgos singulares y la sumisión incondicional a la arbitrariedad de las políticas económicas y sociales del propio Estado.

    Rotulemos que las estrategias de reducción territorial emprendidas desde la derrota de 1883 siguieron hasta comienzos de los años 50 del Siglo XX. Las medidas de la Contrarreforma agraria dictadas por la junta pinochetista (1973-1990) agudizó de manera irreversible este proceso.

    Frente a este desafío y frente a la violencia del Estado chileno, no obstante democrático, el pueblo mapuche sueña sus utopías territoriales. ¿Cuáles son sus posibilidades de realizarlas?

    We are able to postulate, based on past and recent history, that the Mapuche have a relatively clear and unbreakable consciousness of being a people, a nation, in spite of the remodeling they have suffered due to the combined impact of neoliberal and globalizing policies in Chile. The particularly acute and crucial dilemma in our times with which this group must battle, consists perhaps in confronting their perception of being a people with the perception that is its counterpart, almost to the point of negation, by the Chilean State, since their inclusion through the sinister "War of Pacification" (1881) with the drastic reduction of their territories, the failed progressive attempts of disolution of their unique cultural traits and the unconditional supression to the arbitraryness of economic and social public policies of the same State. Let us emphasize that the strategies of territorial reduction begun since their defeat in 1883 continued through the early 1950s. The measures of the agrarian Counterreform dictated by the Pinochet junta (1973-1990) irreversibly agravated this process.

    Facing this challenge and faced with the violence of the State, albeit democratic, the Mapuche people dream their utopian territories. What are the possibilities of them achieving these dreams?
