CALIOP is the first lidar to monitor the Earth from space autonomously and continuously. Since its laser first fired in April 2006, it has been documenting atmospheric particles: aerosols, liquid cloud droplets, ice crystals. In this article, we describe the scientific discoveries CALIOP helped make possible about atmospheric crystals: vertical structure of ice clouds, global maps,microphysical properties (shape and orientation), the link between ice crystals and water vapour in the Tropics, and crystals in the polar stratosphere...
CALIOP est le premier lidar à observer la Terre depuis l'espace de manière autonome et opérationnelle. À bord de la plateforme orbitale CALIPSO, il documente, depuis avril 2006, les particules en suspension dans l'atmosphère : aérosols, gouttelettes d'eau, cristaux de glace. Dans cet article, nous décrivons les apports scientifiques remarquables de CALIOP concernant les cristaux atmosphériques : structure verticale des nuages de glace, cartographies, propriétés microphysiques (forme et orientation dans l'espace), lien entre cristaux de glace et vapeur d'eau dans les régions tropicales, cristaux dans la stratosphère polaire...
