La poesía árabe que cuenta con una tradición milenaria, ha conocido durante su larga historia muchos movimientos innovadores. Pero quizá, ninguno de éstos ha sido tan trascendental como el conocido por al-ši’r al-ḥurr (el verso libre), término polémico y poco aceptado por la crítica árabe. El poema que escriben estos nuevos poetas se distingue del tradicional tanto en sus rasgos formales, como en sus contenidos y su lenguaje.
De esta poesía moderna han surgido otras modalidades poéticas como al-ši’r al-manṯur (la poesía prosificada) y qaṣīda al-naṯr (el poema en prosa). Hoy día se produce en lengua árabe tanto poesía clásica como moderna. Pero a pesar del tiempo transcurrido desde la aparición de esta nueva poesía, hace más de medios siglo, los críticos siguen discutiendo su validez.

Arabic poetry, counting with a millenary tradition has known, during its long history, many innovating movements. But, probably, none of them were as transcendental as the well known al-ši’r al-ḥurr (free verse). This polemical expression is lightly accepted by Arabic Critics. The poem written by these new poets differs of the traditional one both in its formal features and in the contents of its language. From this sport of modern poetry, other kinds have appeared like al-ši’r al-manṯur (poetic as prose); qaṣīda al-naṯr (Prose Poem). Nowadays Arabic poets are still writing both, classical and modern poetry. But, in spite of the time past, from the appearance of this new poetry, more than fifty years, critics are still discussing its validity.
