    Resumen El protagonista de esta historia es Rafael, un enfermo maniaco depresivo que conocí al inicio de mi actividad profesional como enfermera en la Unidad de Salud Mental de un hospital general. La experiencia que viví entonces, atendiendo a Rafael en distintas fases de su enfermedad y la impresión que me causó su decisión final, modificaron la percepción que yo tenía de la Enfermería. Me planteé la importancia de dos intervenciones que antes no había valorado: la presencia y la escucha activa como herramientas indispensables en la atención enfermera de calidad.

    Abstract (Presence and active listening: priority Nursing Interventions) The protagonist of this story is Rafael, a maniacal depressive patient that I knew to the beginning of my professional activity like nurse in the Unit of Mental Health of a general hospital. The experience that I lived at that time, attending to Rafael in different phases of his disease and the impression that caused me with his final decision modified the perception that I had of the Infirmary. I thought about the importance of two nursing interventions that I had not valued before: the presence and the active listening like indispensable tools for the quality nursing care.
