This paper presents the results of a research and assessment project focusing on palaeo iron and steel remains in Bizkaia, prompted by the need to create a heritage protection instrument for the remains of historical mountain foundries or haizeolak. For eight years now, a multidisciplinary team has been identifying, cataloguing, recovering and studying these sites. The collaboration between the Basque administration and research centres (museums and universities) has provided a solid basis for our project, and has proven an essential factor in the results obtained to date. Currently, the work continues as an open doctoral research area at the UPV-EHU.
