  • Resumen
    • The invitation to give a talk at this aniversary is very honoring for me and not for the first time. It is almost twenty years since I had a similarly honoring invitation from Professor Santesmases to the Congreso Internacional de Automática in 1958 which in fact was one of the earliest international conferences on information processing: 40 of 55 papers were on computers. Many years of friendship and cooperation followed, in particular in IFIP where Prof. Santesmases represented Spain for many years.

The talk I have written for this occasion is -of course- on computers and much more than a occasional paper. It is not a final report on a theory of computer architecture. Indeed it contains very little of a formal theory, which would not have been a ideal for this event. My paper discusses the prospects of a theoretical analisys of the design process with speccial consideration of computers, computer programming and computer applications - the intentions for work to be done. Asking the proper questions is the best preparation for good answers and the most interesting part of the work.

What I am trying is a natural step in my life and I am very grateful that I am able to carry it out. The Chairman of the Board of IBM has appointed me IBM- Fellow which allows me to do this research with a modest staff during the next four years. After building and programming a computer, after analisys and formal definition of programming languages, the investigation of design principles should be a step into the future as well as a summary of the past.
