Malformación occipitoatlantoaxial congénita en una yegua pura raza española.

    Se describe un caso de malformación occipitoatlantoaxial en una yegua Pura Raza Española. La yegua manifestó en breve tiempo incoordinación, parálisis posterior y postración. La necropsia reveló fusión asimétrica de la articulación atlanto-occipital, implicando al occipital y al arco dorsal del atlas. Asimismo, el arco dorsal del atlas era incompleto y no existía el agujero transverso derecho. Se atribuyó un origen congénito a las malformaciones encontradas.

    A case of an occipitoatlantoaxial malformation in an adult Spanish purebred mare is described. The animal suddenly developed incoordination, hind quarters paralysis and ultimately postration. Following euthanasia, necropsy revealed asymmetric fusion of the atlanto-occipital joint, involving the occipital and the dorsal arch of the atlas. In addition, the dorsal arch of the atlas had failed to fuse, and the right transverse foramen of the atlas was not perforated. A congenital origin was attributed to the malformation.
