    Suele aceptarse que el propósito de la narrativa histórica es reflejar al menos una versión de la verdad acerca del pasado; se tiende a olvidar que la mentira también tiene una historia que contar. El presente artículo ofrece como ejemplo la variedad de mitos y mentiras surgidos en torno al republicanismo irlandés entre 1858 y 1888. Al principio de este período, la Hermandad Republicana Irlandesa (IRB) se convirtió en el centro de una guerra propagandística entre defensores y adversarios, representada respectivamente como un ejército secreto bien organizado, o un sanguinario complot socialista para la matanza de terratenientes y sacerdotes. Hacia el final de la década de 1880, la IRB había perdido protagonismo, y se había convertido simplemente en un arma política contra C.S. Parnell; un nuevo papel que culminó en uno de los mayores escándalos políticos de la historia de Irlanda: 'Las falsificaciones de Parnell'.

    It is normally accepted that the purpose of a historical narrative is to arrive at some kind of 'truth' about the past; it is less often remembered that Falsehood has its own story to tell. This article illustrates the point by looking at the various myths and fabrications surrounding Irish republicanism between 1858 and 1888. At the beginning of this period, the Irish Republican Brotherhood was at the centre of a propaganda war between partisans and adversaries, portrayed in turn as a well-organised secret army, or a sanguinary socialistic plot for the assassination of landlords and priests. By the late 1880s, the IRB had lost the limelight and become a simple political weapon against C.S. Parnell, leading to one of the greatest political scandals of Irish history: the 'Parnell forgeries'.
