In Ancient Latin Literature there are many cases in which the authorship of the manuscripts is not stated, either because writers did not sign their work, or because their names were lost. Some works have been attributed to canonical authors but critics have often questioned the authenticity of those ascriptions. Interpolations of an unknown author within works that do not pose problems of authorship are also frequently found. As evidenced in this study, texts by unknown or doubtful authors are treated differently (neither systematically nor consistently) in histories of Latin literature, in editions, dictionaries, etc. making access to them difficult, as well as to study them and even to quote them
