L'auteur d'une oeuvre littéraire peut-il, tel un peintre, brosser son propre portrait ? C'est ce que nous tenterons d'aborder dans cet article avec Romain Gary chez qui ce thème littéraire est une donnée constante évoluant au gré des étapes de la vie même d'un auteur en éternelle quête identitaire. Pour preuve, les différents pseudonymes qu'il prend pour « recommencer », mais aussi les personnages romanesques qui portent toujours en eux l'empreinte d'un passé ou d'un présent le concernant. Gary, ainsi, semble vouloir toujours dire qui il est au moment où il écrit et l'autoportrait apparaît comme un phénomène inconscient de la quête de soi.

Is the author of a literary work capable to represent his own portrait as a painter does? This is the question we will try to approach in this article; within the works of the writer Romain Gary, in which the literary self-portrait is permanently present and progressing according to the stages of the author�s own life. This last is eternally in search of identity, something that is noticeable throughout the use of different pseudonyms in order to �"restart�" but also throughout characters who always carry a trace of Gary's past or present life. The author always seems willing to say who he is while writing. In this case, the self portrait would certainly be, for Romain Gary, an unconscious phenomenon of self quest.
