Resumen de A relationship on the rocks: the applied linguistic and the language teacher

J. O'Driscoll

  • This article addresses the problem of why the present relationship between the practitioners of applied linguistics and the practitioners of language teaching is so lukewarm. The problem is approached by an attempt to identify some characteristics of the works of applied linguistics which indicate a clear divergence of outlook between the two parties and thus tend to alienate language teachers. It is suggested that the underlying cause of this alienation derives from the very different circumstances in which members of the two groups typically work. This is followed by an account of the negative consequences of the situation for language teaching in practice. It is argued that greater understanding of these personal differences, and possibly a new analogy for the relationship, are needed if the channels of communication from theory to practice are to be unclogged.
