What follows is an effort to understand the nature of official record keeping in the seventeenth-century Irish parliament, particularly making use of two manuscripts to be found in Armagh and Dublin. We have a reasonably good understanding of the journals of the Irish parliament in their printed form, but due to the destruction of most of the originals, we are at a loss for certain information, some of which was purposely left out and more information which was probably inadvertently omitted. Once we can analyze this matter that, for whatever reason, was left out of the printed journals, we can add to our knowledge of the seventeenth-century parliament. Not only will this add to our understanding of the political events but we will surely also come to a greater understanding of the development of the procedures of record keeping in parliament.
