  Puede existir la percepción de que los negocios familiares tienden a estancarse y olvidar el carácter emprendedor de sus fundadores. El objeto de este artículo es mostrar no sólo que las empresas familiares pueden ser emprendedoras, sino que están forzadas a serlo para asegurar su continuidad y prosperidad a largo plazo. Tras repasar las ventajas y limitaciones de este tipo de compañías, se describen algunas prácticas que contribuyen a la estabilidad del sistema familia-empresa y son la base sobre la cual se asienta una dinámica necesaria de renovación sostenida. La experiencia del grupo familiar Arteche, que se encuentra en su tercera generación, sirve para ilustrar algunos de los conceptos mencionados.

  There may exist a perception that family businesses tend to stagnate and forget the entrepreneurial spirit of their founders. The goal of this paper is to show that family companies not only can be entrepreneurial, but they must be so in order to ensure their long-term survival and prosperity. After reviewing the potentials and constraints of such companies, we describe several practices that contribute to the stability of the family-business system and are the foundations for the required dynamics of sustained renewal. The experience of the Arteche family holding serves to illustrate some of the concepts introduced.
