    Australian foreign policy is an essential element of the identity of a country caught between Western history and Asian geography. Canberra has supported the regional transformations in Asia and the Pacific while maintaining the centrality of the alliance with the United States, which is a defining feature of Australia’s international identity. However, the ambition and assertion of power, omnipresent in the speeches of Australian leaders, focus increasingly on the neighboring countries and the region as a whole. As part of an increasingly coherent and structured regional system, which is imposing its economic, political, strategic and institutional priorities, Australia is developing its influence through a number of roles: Washington’s privileged ally, the policeman of the Pacific, a major player in Southeast Asia, the sponsor of Asian regionalism or energetic superpower in order to preserve its prosperity and security, which has been the country’s priority since its origin.

    La politique étrangère australienne est un élément essentiel de l’identité et de la politique de ce pays, entre histoire occidentale et géographie asiatique. Canberra a accompagné les transformations régionales en Asie et Pacifique tout en maintenant la centralité de l’alliance américaine, qui est un élément essentiel de l’identité internationale de l’Australie. Mais l’ambition et l’affirmation de la puissance, omniprésentes dans les pratiques discursives des dirigeants australiens, s’expriment de plus en plus en direction du voisinage et de la région dans son ensemble. Dans un système régional, de plus en plus cohérent et structuré, qui impose ses enjeux économiques, politiques, stratégiques et institutionnels, l’Australie construit son influence à travers de nombreux rôles, alliée privilégiée de Washington, gendarme du Pacifique, acteur en Asie du Sud-Est, promoteur du régionalisme asiatique, ou superpuissance énergétique afin de préserver sa prospérité et sa sécurité, qui sont les enjeux de référence depuis les origines de cet État.
