El sacro y real convento de la Orden de Alcántara se inició en 1505 en el arrabal de la villa. Primero Pedro de Larrea y después Martín López serían los maestros mayores de la obra, hasta que en 1544 se contrató a Pedro de Ybarra. Durante el tiempo de su maestría, que abarcó desde esa fecha hasta su muerte en 1570, se concluyó la parte conventual con el hermoso cuerpo de la galería oriental y se erigió todo lo que de la iglesia llegó a hacerse por el abandono definitivo del proyecto constructivo seis años más tarde. Si en un anterior artículo de esta misma revista dábamos a conocer las cuentas de la obra en el periodo de Ybarra, ahora nos ocupamos en mayor detalle del progreso de esos trabajos.

(Traducción de José María Gallardo Durán, a quien se lo agradezco) The sacred and royal convent of the Order of Alcántara was begun on the outskirts of the town in 1505. The master builders were Pedro de Larrea in the first place, and Martín López after him, until Pedro de Ybarra was hired in 1544. During the time he was master builder, that is, since that year until the date of his death in 1570, the convent proper, with its eastern gallery beautiful wing, was built, as well as the whole part of the church that could be erected before the building project was permanently abandoned six years later. As we made the accounts of the building during Ybarra�s time known in a previous article in this same magazine, we will now look in greater detail into the progress of those works.
