En 1564, Felipe II creó un tercio de infantería para ayudar a sus aliados genoveses a mantener bajo control la isla de Córcega. Con el tiempo, esta unidad pasaría a ser conocida como Tercio de Gonzalo de Bracamonte, por su primer maestre de campo, y, posteriormente, como Tercio de Cerdeña, al ser acantonado en esta isla. Tras participar en el socorro a Malta en 1565, este tercio se sumó a la primera expedición a los Países Bajos a través del Camino Español, la realizada por Alba en 1567. En Flandes, participaría en los sucesos de la campaña de Frisia en 1568. Allí, el Tercio de Cerdeña sería derrotado por los rebeldes en la batalla de Heilegerlee, quedaría asediado en Groningen y participaría en la victoria de Jemmingen. Tras esta última, habiendo protagonizado parte de sus soldados y mochileros un ataque contra el pueblo de Heilegerlee desobedeciendo las órdenes del duque de Alba, este decidió disolver la unidad, convirtiéndose así el Tercio de Cerdeña

In 1564, Felipe II created a «Tercio» of infantry to help their Genoese allies to keep control of the island of Corsica. Over time, this unit would become known as the Tercio of Gonzalo de Bracamonte, for its first field marshal and later as a Tercio of Sardinia, to be stationed on the island. After participating in the relief of Malta in 1565, the Tercio joined the first expedition to the Netherlands via the Spanish Trail in 1567. In Flandes, participate in the events of the campaign of Friesland in 1568. There, the Tercio of Sardinia was defeated by the rebels in the battle of Heilegerlee, would be besieged in Groningen and participate in the victory of Jemmingen. After, having starred in some of their soldiers an attack against the people of Heilegerlee disobeying the orders of the Duke, Alba decided to disband the unit, becoming the Tercio of Sardinia in the first Tercio of the Spanish infantry dissolved for disciplinary reasons.
