    Determinar la figura bajo la cual los pueblos indígenas han logrado legitimidad en el ámbito internacional ha sido objeto de una prolongada discusión. La cuestión ha girado en torno a establecer si los indígenas son "pueblos" que gozan del derecho a la propedad colectiva de sus tierras y autonomía dentro de sus territorios, es lógico preguntarse si como tales, gozan del derecho a la libre determinación y cual es su estatus dentro de los estados que habitan. En este artículo estudiamos diversas teorías que sustentan el reconocimiento internacional de los pueblos indígenas y la implicaciones derivadas del mismo.

    To determine the figure under which indigenous peoples have achieved legitimacy in the international sphere has been the subject of a lengthy discussion. The issue has revolved around determining whether the Indians are national minorities, populations or peoples. If was assume that Indians are "peoples" have the right to collective owneeship of their land and autonomy within their territories, it is logical to ask whether, as such, have the right to self-determination and what is really their status within States they inhabit. In this paper we study various theories that unerpin the international recognition of indigenous peoples and the implications thereof.
