    Paradoxically, the collapse of the USSR has brought China and Russia closer. On the other hand, the end of the Cold War has not lessened the antagonism that exists between the Popular Republic and the United States.

    In Asia, China’s main concern is to establish itself as the leading power against Japan. This determination to reorganize the region according to its own ambitions gives China’s Asia policy a clearly “imperial overtone”.

    La disparition de l’URSS s’est paradoxalement soldée par un rapprochement sino-russe. En revanche, la fin de la guerre froide n’a pas réglé l’antagonisme entre la République populaire et les États-Unis. En Asie, la préoccupation première de la Chine est de s’imposer comme principale puissance face au Japon. Cette volonté de réorganiser la région en fonction de ses propres ambitions donne à la politique asiatique de la Chine une connotation franchement « impériale ».
