En el momento de la iniciación, los masones eligen un nombre simbólico que les identificará en sus acciones dentro de la Orden. En el proceso de iniciación, los masones poseen la oportunidad de escoger un nombre simbólico diferente a su nombre de pila. Estos nombres simbólicos revelan sus percepciones del mundo y transmiten un aspecto vital del que quisieron informar a los demás miembros. ¿Por qué este uso fue exclusivo de las masonerías hispanoamericanas? ¿Cuándo y por qué se extendió la costumbre? El estudio de caso analizado fue la comunidad asturiana, ya que fue una de los más importantes grupos de inmigrantes españoles en América. Con estas notas y el estudio regional se pretende contestar a estos interrogantes: ¿Fue el nombre simbólico un uso originado por los masones? ¿Fue exclusivo de la masonería? ¿Qué informaciones destacan de los nombres simbólicos hispanoamericanos de los masones de Asturias? ¿Qué datos revelan los nombres simbólicos hispanoamericanos de los masones asturianos residentes en Hispanoamérica?

At the time of initiation, Masons choose a symbolic name that will identify them in their actions within the Order. In the initiation process, Masons have the opportunity to choose a symbolic name different from their birth name.
These symbolic names reveal their perception of the world and transmit a vital aspect of something they wanted to inform other members of. Why was the use of symbolic names exclusive of Spanish-American Freemasonry? When and why did this custom spread? The case study analyzed was the Asturian community, since it was one of the most important groups of Spanish immigrants in America. With these notes and regional study we seek to answer these questions: Was the symbolic name a use originated by the Masons? Was it exclusive of Freemasonry? What information distinguishes the symbolic Hispanic American names from the Masons of Asturias? What data reveals the Hispanic American symbolic names of Asturian Mason residents in Hispanic America?
