  Este artículo busca mostrar cómo y porqué los masones practicantes del Rito Nacional Mexicano en el siglo XIX secularizaron su tradición para responder a sus compromisos sociales, patrióticos, liberales y democráticos. Además, muestra cómo ellos sustituyeron La Biblia por la Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos en sus juramentos masónicos, en un contexto social en el que jurarla se consideraba un anatema por el Papa Pío IX y el clero católico, y en un contexto masónico adverso en el que sustituir el Libro de la Ley y participar en la política como masones era contravenir la tradición especulativa londinense.

  This article seeks to show how and why the Freemasons practicing the Mexican National Rite in the 19th century secularized their tradition to respond to their social, patriotic, liberal and democratic pledges. It also shows how they substituted The Bible for the Constitution of the Mexican United States in their Freemasonic oaths, in a social context in which swearing by it was considered an anathema by Pope Pius IX and the Catholic clergy, and in an adverse Freemasonic context in which substituting The Book of the Law and participating in policy as Freemasons was contravening the London speculative tradition.
