Resumen de Gringas, Ghouls and Guatemala: The 1994 Attacks on North American Women Accused Of Body Organ Trafficking

Abigail E. Adams

  • This article compares Guatemalans' use of the term gringa in their response to 1) the 1994 child-stealing scare and 2)Jennifer Harbury's (the U.S. lawyer) search for her guerilla husband. As an "antikin" ghoul reproduced at the unstable intersection of North/South and male/female hierarchies, the gringa embodies boundaries, and elusive, tantalizing bordercrossing possibilities. The gringa is differently constituted by ladino elites and by peasants. Both narratives interweave in today's competition for fatherhood between military and civilian governments.
