  • Resumen
    • This article contributes to the literature on ethnicity in Latin America, by analyzing the challenges faced by contemporary indigenous movements that aim to maintain their legitimacy. The case explores the political practices of an indigenous organization in the Ecuadorian Andes. The organization plays key role in the ethnogenesis process by using ethnic identity as a weapon for political struggle. In constituting itself as an institution that produces discourse and exercises power on behalf of its grassroots membership, the organization also aims to reproduce itself and its own power. However, this increasing social control ultimately undermines the very foundations of its struggle and legitimacy
