The life of Colombian indigenous leader Juan Gregorio Palechoris used to explore the theme of the transformation of ethnic identity and the interplay between individual and collective identity. The emergence of indigenous organizations over the last twenty-five years of Colombia's history demonstrates the redefinition of ethnic identities and the role territory played in the construction of contemporary ethnic identities. Just as ethnicity moves in permanent tension, susceptible to the �loss of roots,� so Juan Gregory Palechor left his community to redefine a political identity with an ethnic base. It is through the constantly changing and contradictory character of ethnicity that he expressed a renewed sense of personal politics
