    Comenzando con los últimos años de la época ilustrada y continuando a lo largo del siglo XIX, la caridad representaba para las mujeres su manera de participar en los cambios sociales y económicos que ocurrían a su alrededor. Este artículo examina la importancia de la beneficencia y la caridad en la vida y obra de María Rosa Gálvez, la Condesa de Castroterreño, Frasquita Larrea, Cecilia Böhl de Faber y Concepción Arenal. Estas mujeres expresaban a través de sus acciones y sus escritos, sus deseos políticos y sociales, que a veces abrazaban, a veces rechazaban los impulsos modernizadores en la España decimonónica

    Beginning with the last years of the Enlightenment and continuing throughout the nineteenth century, charity represented for women their way of participating in the social and economic changes of their times. This article examines the importance of beneficence and charity in the lives and works of María Rosa Gálvez, the Countess of Castroterreño, Frasquita Larrea, Cecilia Böhl de Faber and Concepción Arenal. These women expressed through their actions and their writings, their political and social desires that at times embraced and at times rejected the modernizing impulses in nineteenth-century Spain.
