    The theme of the double is presented in The Tenant through a constant swinging between the difference and the identity that is described by the trajectory of the change.

    The visual element serves especially as a sign of a problematic duality where both space and time become changeable, shifting, according to the character’s inner perspective. The theme of the perpetual cycle, which abolishes the difference between life and death, is part of the labyrinthine layout of this text where the reader, like the character, gets lost and finds his place in turn.

    Our aim in this paper is to show how the theme and the structure merge to lead to an open ending on a double question: the mysterious identity of the «original» and the genuineness of the existence of its «double».

    Dans Le Locataire chimérique le thème du double est présenté à travers une constante oscillation entre la différence et l’identité qui dessine la trajectoire de la transformation. L’élément visuel est spécialement révélateur d’une dualité problématique où l’espace et le temps deviennent changeants, mouvants, selon la perspective interne du personnage. Le thème du cycle perpétuel, qui abolit la différence entre la vie et la mort, s’inscrit dans la configuration labyrinthique d’un texte où le lecteur, comme le personnage, s’égare et se retrouve tour à tour. Notre objectif, dans cette étude, est de montrer comment la thématique et la structure se rejoignent pour aboutir à un final ouvert sur une double interrogation: la mystérieuse identité de l’«original» et l’authenticité de l’existence de son «double».
